If an international student wants to enroll in a course that lasts longer than four months in Australia, they must apply for an Australia student visa.
Before applying for a student visa, the candidate must have obtained an unconditional offer letter from an Australian university. They must also have accepted the offer in writing and paid the required tuition fee.
For any program of study, an international student needs to apply for a Subclass 500 Student Visa.
Interestingly, the Australian student visa does not have an age limit. You can apply for a student visa even if you have already obtained a working holiday visa for Australia.
The application fee for a student visa is AUD 575, which has to be paid along with submitting the application. However, if you have any dependents who will be accompanying you, you will have to pay additional fees.
The validity period of the Australian student visa depends on the duration of the study program. The student visa also allows the holder to stay in Australia for a brief period after the end of the course. This can be one to three months, depending on the length of the study program and the month in which it ends. For example, if the duration of a study program is ten months, and it ends in November or December, the student would be allowed to stay in Australia till March 15 of the following year.
The processing time for Australian student visas varies depending on a number of factors. But usually, it is up to four weeks. It is always ideal for applying for a student visa as soon as you receive your CoE.
With a student visa, you can come to Australia up to 90 days before the course starts. The holder of an Australian student visa is also allowed to work for up to 40 hours a fortnight during the semesters and full-time during holidays. However, a student can start working only after the course begins. Some courses require the students to work, which is a formal, registered part of the course. But this is not included in the limit of 40 hours. A student can do unpaid or voluntary work with a student visa, which also comes under the 40-hour limit.
An Australian student visa allows the partner of the holder to accompany them to Australia as a dependent. However, the visa holder has to prove that their relationship with the partner had been genuine and exclusive for at least 12 months. It means they must have been living together for at least 12 months.
If you are a citizen of the UK or Ireland, you need not have the health checks done for an Australia student visa, except in certain circumstances like if you plan to be trained as a doctor, dentist, or nurse in Australia. You will need a health checkup also if you will be working or undergoing training in an Australian childcare center as part of the study program. Health assessment was mandatory if the applicant has lived in another country for more than three consecutive months in the last five years.
The student visa holders may be allowed to apply for an Australian visa in certain circumstances. If the duration of the study program(bachelor’s, master’s, or research degree) is at least two years, the candidate can apply for a Post Study Work Visa, with which the holder can stay and work in Australia for two to four years.
