The year 2019 was an impressive one for Canada immigration and signs indicate that the year 2020 will also be a highly active one. Canada government has already set an increased immigration target for 2020 and revealed its plan to admit more than one million newcomers in the next few years. Now let’s have a look into how the year 2020 is going to be a favourable one for Canada immigration aspirants.
Express Entry
The year 2019 had been an active year for Express Entry and it is expected that it will continue to be so in the current year too. The last Express Entry draw of 2019 saw 3200 candidates receiving Invitations to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence in Canada. The total number of ITAs issued in the year 2019 was 85300, which exceeds the immigration target set by Canada for the year.
The first Express Entry draw of 2020 held on January 8 invited 3400 candidates to apply for permanent residence in Canada. It shows an increase of 200 in the number of ITAs issued when compared to the previous draw. This increase indicates that the Canada government has started the year keeping in mind the ambitious immigration targets.
Provincial Nominee Programs
Canada’s immigration target for 2019 through Provincial Nominee Programs was 61000. In 2020, Canada wants to admit 67800 new permanent residents through PNP. Ontario has urged the federal government to double the number of immigration candidates it can nominate for permanent residence in Canada. If the federal government agrees to increase the allocation, we can witness a significant increase in the number of invitations to be issued under this program. Other provinces may also follow suit and try to have more nominations in order to meet the demands of their growing labour markets.
Family Class Immigration
Canada’s immigration policies give the ultimate importance to family reunification. Recently, Canada Government introduced two major initiatives that aim to make it easier for families to reunite in Canada, The first is the introduction of a centralized intake process that allows protected persons to submit applications for permanent residence, both for themselves and their family members who are outside of Canada, at a single location.
The other initiative is the introduction of a one-year Centralized Concurrent Processing Pilot. It makes possible the simultaneous processing of applications of both the protected person and their overseas dependent family members.
Further, all are waiting eagerly for the opening of the Parents and Grandparents Program for new applicants in 2020. Under this program, Canadians can sponsor their parents and grandparents to move to the country permanently.
International Students
As in the previous years, Canada will be a top destination for international students in 2020 too. The Post-graduate Work Permit offered by the federal government of Canada helps foreign students to stay back in the country after their studies and earn valuable Canadian work experience.
Asylum seekers
Canada welcomes more than 50000 asylum seekers every year. The government is still in the process of setting up a system to effectively handle the high number of applications seeking asylum. It is expected Canada government would soon be able to resolve some of the issues related to refugees by reducing backlogs and long waiting periods.
