Canada Immigration Programs For International Students

Canada has several immigration programs that are available for international students. Each of these programs is differently operated and comes with requirements not just limited to completing the education.

Canada Experience Class or CEC

The Express Entry System for Canadian immigration manages the Canada Experience Class (CEC) program. It is one of the quickest ways international students can get their permanent residence status in Canada. The CEC program has several eligibility criteria, such as the applicant’s age, educational level and language proficiency. Most importantly, the applicants must prove that they have completed one year of full-time skilled work experience in the country within the past three years or part-time work experience with the same amount of time. CEC is considered an excellent migration option when an international student achieves this level of Canadian work experience.

Remember that the work experience gained during your study period will not be counted towards the one-year requirement to qualify for CEC. However, once you graduate, you will become eligible to get your post-graduation work permit and attain the work experience required for the CEC program.

Post-Graduation Work Permits

Getting a post-graduation work permit allows you to stay back in Canada after graduating from your Designated Learning Institution or DLI and work with a Canadian employer. This work experience will help you qualify for permanent residence status in Canada through the CEC program and the Provincial Nominee Program or PNP, an employer-driven Canadian immigration program. Note that all the study programs offered at DLIs are not suitable for you to get your post-graduation work permit.

Federal Skilled Worker Program

The Federal Skilled Worker Program, or FSWP, is also a Canadian immigration program operated via the Express Entry system. FSWP is an excellent permanent immigration option for international students. It does not require Canadian work experience as in the case of CEC. However, applicants should have gained at least one year of full-time, continuous skilled worker experience from any country or a part-time work experience for the equivalent period. So, this option will be much easier to get your permanent residence status in Canada after you complete your study. The country is focused on welcoming over 110,000 immigrants by 2024. Furthermore, pursuing Canadian immigration through FSWP will help you gain permanent residence status within six months, much less than the processing time required for other skilled worker immigration programs.

Provincial Nominee Programs

Most Canadian provinces and territories have got their programs for immigration known as the Provincial Nominee Programs or PNPs. Every PNP is operated differently as they are made to meet the requirements of that specific province. Most PNPs favour applicants with some connection to that particular province, including previous studies completed and work experience gained there. Therefore, international students can apply for the PNP, where they complete their study program and finally become qualified to receive their permanent residence status in Canada.

Quebec Immigration Options

Quebec is a Canadian province with a self-operated immigration system different from the rest of the country with its own set of immigration procedures and requirements. Thankfully, the Quebec immigration program is also a great permanent immigration option for international students applying for Canadian permanent residence status.

The two major immigration programs managed by Quebec are as mentioned below:

  • Quebec Experience Program

The Quebec Experience Program, or PEQ, requires international students to have completed their study program or be within six months after completing their studies at a Quebec institution. International students must prove their advanced intermediate knowledge of the French language to qualify for PEQ. The best thing about PEQ is that international students can start the formal immigration procedures before completing their studies. This privilege is not generally granted in other Canadian provinces or for the immigration procedures at the federal level.

  • Quebec Skilled Worker Program

The Quebec Skilled Worker Program, or QSW, is a good immigration option for international students who are in Quebec and completed or are about to complete their studies in the province. Students are not required to prove their mandatory French language proficiency as in the case of PEQ but must be able to get a minimum score based on the QSW points assessment grid.
