The Provincial Nominee Programs allow provinces and territories in Canada to nominate immigration candidates for permanent residence in the country. These programs allow the Canadian provinces/territories to choose candidates based on the labour market demands and demographic requirements. There are close to 80 different PNP immigration pathways. The application procedure and eligibility requirements are different for each of these. Over the past few years, Canada PNP programs have emerged as a prominent and popular pathway for Canada immigration. The country has been relying on PNPs to address the labour shortage and lack of population growth in the country.
Canada immigration plan
According to Canada’s Immigration Levels Plan, the country would be admitting 67,800 new permanent residents through PNPs in 2020. The target will be increased further in the next year, and in 2021, Canada plans to accept 71300 candidates through PNPs.
Previous connections
Most of the PNPs give priority to those candidates who have a previous connection to the respective provinces, in the form of family members residing there or education or work experience. However, some PNP pathways do not require the candidate to have previous connections to the province.
Express Entry-aligned PNPs
Most of the Provincial Nominee Programs have at least one stream or category aligned to the federal Express Entry system. These allow Express Entry candidates to receive a nomination for permanent residence from Canadian provinces/territories. The Express Entry candidates who are nominated by a province will have 600 additional Comprehensive Ranking System(CRS) score points added to their total score, which increases their chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence in Canada in a federal Express Entry draw.
PNPs remain to be quite active these days despite the COVID-19 crisis. In May alone, the PNPs issued close to 2000 nominations. With a few PNP draws having already taken place, it is expected that June too would be a busy month as far as PNPs are concerned.
