The quota for parent sponsorship invites is around 20,000 each year, and the IRCC has not yet revealed the draw dates for 2023. To prevent application denial, only eligible individuals should take part in the draw. The opportunity to sponsor must be lost if an incomplete application is returned after 4 months and is not submitted within 60 days of receiving an invitation. All PR applications must now be submitted electronically online instead of on paper, per the IRCC.

Provide your sponsored family members with financial support for a period of 20 years, beginning when they are granted permanent residency. Any provincial social assistance that your sponsored family members received during this time period must be repaid. You and your sponsored family members must also consent to the obligations and commitments listed in the sponsorship agreement.

Clauses included in the sponsorship agreement are that your sponsored family members will depend on you to provide for their basic needs, which include things like food, clothing, housing, utilities, personal needs, home supplies, and medical care that is not covered under the public health insurance, such as eye and dental care. You expect the individual you sponsor to do everything possible to assist their family.

It is essential to remember that the sponsorship agreement is still in effect and that you are still responsible for meeting the basic requirements listed in it for the time period specified, regardless of circumstances like marriage dissolution, separation or divorce, family disputes, unemployment, financial changes, or the death of the primary applicant (if you also sponsored their family members). You will be required to complete and sign a paper throughout the application process that contains both the undertaking and the sponsorship agreement, confirming your commitment and duties as a sponsor.

Requirements to sponsor your parents or grandparents:

In order to sponsor your parents or grandparents for Canadian permanent residence, you must meet the following requirements.

  • You must be a citizen or legalized permanent resident of Canada.
  • At least 18 years of age is necessary.
  • For family sponsorship, you must achieve or surpass the minimum necessary income (MNI) criteria.
  • You must sign an agreement promising to support your sponsored parents or grandparents financially for a period of 20 years and to pay back any provincial social assistance funds that were given to them.
  • You need to sign an additional undertaking agreement if you live in Quebec.
  • To prove they have the appropriate income, sponsors must provide IRCC with three Notices of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
  • You have the option to apply for a Super Visa if you are not eligible for parental PR sponsorship since you did not fulfill the MNI criterion for the three-year period. The Super Visa has a one-year maximum income limit of around 30% lower than the Family Sponsorship MNI.

If you live outside of Quebec and want to sponsor someone, you must try to provide them with money for a specific amount of time. This outlay of money is referred to as an attempt when applying for Canadian permanent residency on behalf of your parents or grandparents; it is crucial that you satisfy these prerequisites.

Processing Time

Applicants may benefit from the quicker processing timeframes, normally 8 to 10 weeks, by applying under the Family Class Parental and Grandparental Sponsorship or the Super Visa program. It is crucial to remember that processing times could increase due to incomplete form submissions or prolonged verification intervals. It is advised to apply for the Parental and Grandparental Sponsorship Program at least 10 weeks before the desired date of the trip.

You must submit two different applications after being invited to sponsor your parents or grandparents under the PGP (Parent and Grandparent Program). To become a sponsor, you must submit an application, and to prove your eligibility as a sponsor, you must provide the proper paperwork and complete the essential forms.

Application for Permanent Residency

Your parents or grandparents need to submit an application for permanent residency in Canada. To demonstrate their eligibility for permanent residence, they must fill out their application forms and submit the required supporting documentation. The application for sponsorship and the application for permanent residency must also be submitted online together.

Inadmissibility

It is important that your parents or grandparents—as well as any of their dependents—are not considered inadmissible to Canada in order to qualify for sponsorship.

There are two important factors that can indicate inadmissibility.

Health

If a person's health puts an undue burden on Canadian social or health services, they may be prohibited from entering or residing in Canada.

Criminality

If they have committed a crime or have been found guilty of one, whether it happened inside or outside of Canada, they may be judged inadmissible and consequently be refused entrance or permission to stay in Canada.

If you want to improve the likelihood that your sponsorship application will be approved, you must make sure that your parents or grandparents and any of their dependents are eligible and do not violate any immigration laws.
