A major update has been announced by IRCC regarding the fields of study that are eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). The list of the fields of study eligible for PGWP will remain frozen in 2026. It means there will be no additions or removals of the fields of study throughout 2026. It will give international students a much-required certainty in their education and subsequent career pathway in Canada. It will allow the students as well as the institutions to plan the program more confidently, focusing on employability in Canada.
The fields in the below categories will remain unchanged in 2026:
In 2025, there were significant changes to the eligible fields of study. On June 25, 2025, 119 fields of study were added by IRCC in key sectors of healthcare, education, and trades and 178 fields that were no longer aligned with Canada’s labour market priorities were removed. On July 4, 2025, the removed fields were reinstated. They will continue to remain eligible until the next review by IRCC.
International students planning their studies in Canada are encouraged to look into the CIP code of their program to confirm the PGWP eligibility. They must also keep on monitoring the official updates from IRCC.
As an international student, before you plan your study in Canada, verify your CIP code, check your application timeline, and confirm your eligibility.
