Canada is the only country with three cities among the top ten!

Vienna is at the top spot while Copenhagen took the second place, and Calgary, Alberta is tied with Zurich for the third place. In infrastructure and education, Calgary outranked Zurich but not at par in terms of environment and culture. Vancouver is in the fifth position, and Canada’s most populous and significant city, Toronto, made it into the eighth spot. It is a substantial improvement in ranking over last year as the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions made the cities fall in the ranking spot. Toronto held the 20th position in 2021. Lagos, Tripoli, and Damascus came to the last year because of a high threat of terrorism and unsafe living conditions.

The Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) conducted the study. The impact of global development on different cities and their populations has been monitored and analyzed by the EIU for 70 years. As a result, they release a yearly report with the liveability ranking of different prominent cities based on many factors such as education, environment, health care, culture, and stability. The latest information for 2022 has 172 cities with an increase of 33 more.

This year all the cities had an overall higher score since there is an improvement in the general liveability in certain areas. It is because more people got vaccinated against Covid-19. There was a drastic improvement in the scores for culture and environment over 2021, as a result, and they could return to the pre-pandemic situation. The healthcare sector also received higher scores since the pressure and chaos caused by Covid-19 on the global medical systems started to ease. However, we also notice that the scores have dipped to average regarding stability.
