Canada has introduced important new measures regarding the work authorization for international students and graduates. From April 1, 2026, post-secondary international students no longer need a separate co-op work permit to participate in internships, co-ops, or practicums. Now only a valid study permit with on-campus work conditions is needed. The work placement has to be part of the academic program and should not exceed 50% of the program.
This new measure will make it easier for students to complete their academic programs without additional paperwork and delays. Further, there are other amendments that are under consultations, such as allowing the international students waiting for study permit extensions and graduates awaiting Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) decisions to work legally during processing times. Also, the government is considering easing rules for foreign apprentices and standardizing work permissions during the academic breaks.
The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) aims to streamline the process of study and work permissions by introducing the new measures. The changes will reduce uncertainty for students and graduates and improve their access to work experience while maintaining the country’s appeal to international talent.
