Different types of English Proficiency Tests

International students who aspire to study abroad must prove their English language skills, which is one of the important eligibility requirements for admissions. English proficiency tests help institutions to ensure that the students can communicate effectively and can manage their academics successfully.

The English language tests for study abroad that are widely accepted are the IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, and the Duolingo English Test.

Difference Between English Proficiency Tests

IELTS Academic

  • IELTS is scored on a scale of 0 to 9. 9 indicates expert-level proficiency, and 0 indicates that the test has not been completed.
  • 4 sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, and each section is graded separately along with a combined overall result.
  • Total scores: After averaging all section scores, they are converted to the IELTS band score.
  • Final results are given in full or half bands.
  • Test results remain valid for a period of two years from the test date.
  • If you are not satisfied with the score of a specific section, then you can retake it through the One Skill Retake option instead of repeating the entire test.
  • Multiple choices, fill-in-the-blank, and essay styles are the question formats. In the speaking section there is a face-to-face interview with an IELTS examiner.
  • The IELTS Academic can be attended either on paper or using a computer.
  • Exam Duration: Approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes
  • Where to attend: Certain institutions accept IELTS results from the online test taken remotely, whereas others may specifically require the test to be completed at an official test centre.

TOEFL iBT

  • TOEFL iBT is scored on a scale of 1 to 6.
  • 4 sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, and each section is graded separately along with a combined overall result.
  • The total score is calculated by averaging all section scores and rounding to the nearest half band.
  • Test results remain valid for a period of two years from the test date.
  • Until January 2028, test takers will also be provided with a score based on the previous 0–120 scale along with the new assessment system.
  • TOEFL iBT evaluates how well you can use English in academic settings. Multiple choices, fill-in-the-blank, essay style, summary completion, etc. are the question formats in the test. In the speaking section, you need to provide spoken responses to prompts, which are recorded via microphone.
  • The TOEFL iBT is entirely computer-based.
  • Exam Duration: Approximately 2 hours
  • Where to attend: You can complete the test either at an authorized test centre or remotely at home using the TOEFL Home Edition.

PTE Academic

  • PTE Academic is scored on a scale of 10 to 90. Scores of 10–29 correspond to the A1 level on the CEFR scale (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), while 85–90 align with CEFR skill level C2.
  • Undergraduate programs: The recommended minimum score range is 51–60.
  • Postgraduate programs: The recommended minimum score range is 57–67.
  • The 3 sections are: Speaking and Writing; Reading; Listening
  • Test results remain valid for a period of two years from the test date.
  • The test has a range of task types instead of a conventional exam structure. Many questions combine multiple skills, such as speaking with reading or listening with writing.
  • Common question formats are multiple choice, fill-in-the-blanks, re-ordering text, essay writing, and spoken responses.
  • The PTE Academic is entirely computer-based. If you intend to pursue studies below your degree level in the UK, you may need to take the PTE Academic UKVI test.
  • Exam Duration: Approximately 2 hours
  • Where to attend: PTE Academic is conducted at authorized test centres.

Duolingo English Test (DET)

  • DET is scored on a scale of 10 to 160.
  • Test takers get a total score along with separate subscores in four areas.
  • The integrated subscores combine language abilities in Production (speaking and writing), Literacy (reading and writing), Comprehension (listening and reading), and Conversation (listening and speaking).
  • The DET is entirely computer-based.
  • The Duolingo English Test is adaptive. The question difficulty changes depending on your performance.
  • The test includes multiple-choice questions, open-ended speaking prompts, written tasks, and recorded answers for a video interview.
  • Exam Duration: Approximately one hour
